Overwatch League welcomes London and second Los Angeles franchise

Overwatch League welcomes London and second Los Angeles franchise

The first seven team owners included big names in both sports and tech, and it's not surprising to see owners of teams in traditional sports buying in.

Jack Etienne, the founder of Cloud9 managed to get enough money together to buy in to the League.

"We are thrilled that Cloud9's formidable fan base throughout Europe and the United Kingdom now has a local team to call their own, and can't wait to start representing London in the Overwatch League", Etienne said.

The Kroenkes join an eclectic group of owners who have bought spots into the upcoming esports league.

Josh Kroenke, Cofounder of KSE Esports, gave this short statement. We suspect that Blizzard simply didn't want Los Angeles to have three teams when an entire other continent went unfilled.

Overwatch League is expected to begin later this year in a shortened season with a more full, robust offering to come in 2018.

It's believed that Blizzard intends to start the first season with twelve teams, leaving two left to be filled, with ambitions to eventually expand to twenty-eight permanent locations.

Blizzard is well on its way to launching the Overwatch League later this year, as two more franchises have signed on for spots on the league. Well, the future is now.

If you're wondering if the Los Angeles announcement sounds familiar, that's because this represents the second team for the City of Angels. Other such examples include Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs and his hospitality company, Delaware North, partnering with multi-esports organization Splyce and the Miami Heat announcing a "strategic partnership" with Misfits. Founded in 2012, Cloud9 has been a consistent leader in esports across multiple titles. "We are thrilled that Cloud9's formidable fan base throughout Europe and the United Kingdom now has a local team to call their own, and can't wait to start representing London in the Overwatch League".

Cloud9 is also the first organization to buy an Overwatch League spot in Europe-which is a little unusual, considering that it's an American company.

"It was important for us to really find best-in-class operators that, first and foremost, have a proven track record of building and growing and fostering a fan base", Overwatch League commissioner Nate Nanzer said in a phone interview.
