Remembering SU football coach Dick MacPherson

"He left an indelible impact on everyone he touched".

On Wednesday morning, the Syracuse athletic department released a touching tribute video to their longtime coach.

He survived by his wife, Sandra, his daughters Maureen and Janet, and four grandchildren, the school said.

"Yeah, sad day. I knew Dick when he was the head coach at Syracuse, and of course a lot of the people on his staff we've had interconnections with in one way or another - Ivan [Fears], Mike Woicik, Scott [Pioli], Joel Collier, Randy [Edsall], Paul Pasqualoni, Norm [Gerber], George DeLeone, Matt Patricia".

Known for his jocular personality and off-beat comments, MacPherson arrived at Syracuse before the 1981 season. The Orange has slumped through a decade of mediocrity, with only three winning seasons.

Former New England Patriots coach Dick MacPherson has died at the age of 86, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. He had an undefeated season with the Orangemen in 1987, when his team finished 11-0-1 and tied Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.

"During his tenure at Syracuse, MacPherson put together some of the most talented coaching staffs in the country", wrote SU's football program in a statement on its website. Prior to New England, he was the head coach at Syracuse for 10 years.

Coach Mac's rebuild of the 'Cuse football program will go down as one of the most impressive turnarounds in college football history. "My thoughts and prayers and those of the entire city of Syracuse are with his family tonight".
