Glen Campbell Dies and the Tributes Pour In

Glen is one of the greatest voices that ever was in the business and he was one of the greatest musicians.

Yesterday, the death of Glen Campbell at age 81 was felt in every corner of the country music community: Shortly after the news broke, Keith Urban released a heartfelt statement on his Facebook page.

Campbell, best known for a long series of country and western hits he delivered during the 1960s and "70s, was also known for his popular television show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour".

The film, which generated the Grammy-winning song "I'm Not Gonna Miss You", showed the star still instinctively fluent on the guitar yet struggling to remember lyrics and setlists and, by the time of his final show in Napa, California, barely able to lead his band. "I got to keep playing".

Over the next two decades, Campbell released 20 albums, with singles such as "Still Within the Sound of My Voice" and "She's Gone Gone Gone" rising to the top of the charts. Webb's baroque rhymes and complicated melodies could sometimes bog down a singer (Richard Harris couldn't help but turn "MacArthur Park" into turgid camp in 1968) but Glen's light touch sold Jimmy's eccentricities while retaining their otherworldly essence.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys tweeted that Campbell was "an incredible musician and an even better person". Guests ranged from actor John Wayne to The Monkees to his own family.

He also battled an alcohol and drug addiction that he would later kick.

In 2011, Campbell revealed he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease so fans would understand if he seemed disoriented on stage. And instead of receding into the shadows, he planned a tour. According to NME, the years that it was most prevalent from 1991-1993.

"I'd have to pick cotton for a year to make what I'd make in a week in L.A.", he said.

In 2003, the then 67-year-old Campbell crashed his BMW in Phoenix, Arizona, but left the scene before police came. "That's his language. His first language is music".

As a recording artiste, Glen continued to have more success in the country than on the pop charts.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Kim Campbell; three children from their marriage (Cal, Shannon and Ashley); his children from previous marriages (Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane and Dillon); ten grandchildren; and a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren.
