Celtics sign Paul Pierce so he can retire in Boston

The Celtics announced the small forward signed the contract at the Celtics training facility in Waltham, allowing him to retire with the National Basketball Association franchise he spent the most time with in his career.

The Celtics announced Monday that they had signed Pierce to an unspecified contract to allow him to retire with the team.

Paul Pierce is ending his Hall of Fame-worthy career where it all started - at the Boston Celtics.

Named the Most Valuable Player of that 2008 clash, Pierce became the third Celtic ever to earn MVP honors in his first NBA Finals Appearance (Jo Jo White - 1974, Cedric Maxwell - 1981). During his time in Boston, Pierce averaged 21.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.44 steals and 36.6 minutes in 1,102 career games.

In addition to Pierce's retirement, co-owner Wyc Grousbeck said Boston will retire his No. 34, which will soon hang in the rafters at TD Garden.

"It's an honor to have this opportunity to once again call myself a Boston Celtic", Pierce said in the team's press release.

Pierce played 15 of his 19 seasons in the league as a member of the Celtics, before short tenures with the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards and finally the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Celtics noted that Pierce retires as the team's all-time leader in 3-point field goals (1,823), free throws (6,434), and steals (1,583). "I'm a Celtic for life". He made his first All-Star Game in 2002 when he was 24 years old. Pierce trails only John Havliceck for the most years spent in a Celtics uniform.
