West Brom sign Egypt defender Hegazi on loan

West Brom sign Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi on loan

As revealed by the Express & Star last week, Albion chose to make a move for Hegazi after baulking at the £8m loan fee Chelsea demanded for Kurt Zouma. Hopefully he'll be a good signing for us.

He has travelled to Hong Kong to link up with his new team-mates, with the Baggies set to face Leicester City in the first game of the Asia Trophy on Wednesday.

The Baggies are paying the Egyptian champions a loan fee of £875,000 and included in the deal is an option to buy the 26-year-old for £3.5million before June 30, 2018.

Albion chairman John Williams, meanwhile, revealed they were tracking the ex-Fiorentina defender since he "caught their eye" with his superb displays during Egypt's Cup of Nations campaign in January. "We also preferred to allow his departure, as we didn't want to force him to stay", Ahly's Abdel-Hafiz told Egyptian sports website FilGoal.com early on Saturday.

"With it being a loan and, if he does well, we've already agreed a final deal".

The towering defender played a crucial role helping Egypt secure a runner-up finish in last edition's Nations Cup in Gabon, thanks in part to his superb defensive skills throughout the tournament.

Hegazi, who stands at 6ft 5in, has not played in Europe since a three-year stint at Serie A side Fiorentina ended in 2015.

Hegazi, who has 39 worldwide caps, has been with Al Ahly in his home country for the past two seasons after an unsuccessful stint at Italian top flight club Fiorentina.
