Uber, which operates in a sector which thrives off self-employed people working simultaneously for different employers without fixed contracts, said its drivers already earned on average more than the living wage of 7.50 pounds ($9.68) an hour but it would go further.

Uber said at the time that initial investigations had found "one of our driver-partners was in Pretoria when he was attacked by a small group of unknown individuals". He was attacked by a small group of unknown individuals and his auto was set alight while he was in the vehicle, leading to him sustaining serious injuries. This driver-partner is a part of our community.

According to a seperate press release sent out by the company, the driver was attacked by a small group of unknown individuals and his auto was set alight while he was in the vehicle, leading to him sustaining serious injuries. Our thoughts are with his family during this hard time, " she said.

According to a report by eNCA, Lindelani Mashau was in his vehicle when he was approached by unknown men who attacked him and set his auto alight outside Loftus Versveld in Pretoria late last month.

It was not confirmed who was behind the attack.

In what police suspect and meter-taxi drivers claim was retaliation for the attack on the Uber vehicle in Hatfield the day before, a meter taxi driver was set alight when his vehicle was petrol bombed in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

"We are aware of the intimidation against driver-partners and riders at the Gautrain Stations across Gauteng". "We know that these actions do not represent the entire industry, however, this violence and intimidation against those who choose to use technology apps, like Uber, must stop".

"We can only ask that you contact the Department of Transport and Minister of Police to ask for their commit on how they intend to solve these issue, as they are the only ones who can move this forward".

Uber SA spokesperson Samantha Allenberg said the company needs police assistance to ensure the safety of users.
