Microsoft kills Windows 10 support for certain PCs

HP Envy 2

Windows Central has spotted that Microsoft now refers to the fall update as "Autumn Creators Update" on its United Kingdom dedicated site. If you install the Windows 10 Creators Update, icons and text may not appear at all, or may show up as solid color blocks or bars. The bottom line here is that these computers are stuck now at Windows 10 version 1607, and if Microsoft continues its usual 18-month cutoff date, they'll stop receiving OS updates in early 2018. Several people have reported the same problem occurring in their system. An HP Envy X2, for instance, renders the same message upon installing the Windows 10 Creators Update. This includes the Atom Z2760, Atom Z2520, Atom Z2560, and Atom Z2580.

"Microsoft is working with us to help provide compatible drivers to address this incompatibility".

Users who are registered with a corporate Active Directory credential can download Windows Server Insider Preview Build 16237.

There appears to be no easy workaround to the hard-blocking, or developers haven't found one yet, at least. British Windows 10 users will be more familiar with autumn than fall, the American way to describe the season that marks the transition from summer sunshine to wet winter weather.

It's not certain how many devices with Clover Trail chips were sold, although ZDNet guesses the number is in the millions.

The latest update is being rolled out to Windows Insider and it will be available for everyone in the coming days.
