Stars pay tribute to Martin Landau

Legendary actor Martin Landau has died aged 89

At age 17, he worked as a cartoonist at the New York Daily News, where he remained for five years. "In a well-written script, the dialogue ... is what [characters] are willing to share", Landau said in 2001.

"I think if they don't like what I'm doing, they'll say something", he told the Los Angeles Times.

His personal life was as colourful as his career; he was best friends with James Dean and dated Marilyn Monroe in the Fifties.

He made his Broadway debut in Paddy Chayefsky's Middle of the Night alongside his idol, Robinson.

He began his acting career in 1950, working in the theater before making his first film appearance as Leonard, the henchman in Alfred Hicthcock's classic North By Northwest. I was being offered, you know, professional bad guys in the evil business, total comic-strip stuff.

Landau continued work on both big and small screens in the 1990s, with roles in City Hall (1996) and Rounders (1998). He also appeared in films throughout the 1960s such as Cleopatra and The Greatest Story Ever Told before he was cast on "Mission: Impossible".

Actor Martin Landau arrives for the European premiere of the film "Frankenweenie" at the Odeon Leicester Square in central London October 10, 2012. As an undercover disguise artist, Hand proved a showcase for Landau's acting skills, allowing him to play multiple characters - often in the same episode. His publicist Dick Guttman confirmed the death, saying: "We are overcome with sadness". He was married to co-star Bain from 1957 until their divorce in 1993.

He is survived by his two daughters, Juliet (an actress, known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Susie (a writer-producer), a sister, and one grandchild.

Martin Landau, the veteran actor who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi in 1994's Ed Wood, has died. Mr. Landau would go on to earn another Academy Award nomination for his role as Abe in Tucker: The Man and His Dream in 1988.

"I turned down Star Trek".

He won an Oscar for his role as horror legend Bela Lugosi in the 1995 movie Ed Wood.

"An terrible lot of actors who are considered very good actors are not very good actors".

Infamously, Landau passed on the role of Spock in the original Star Trek.

'I would've probably died playing that role. In 2008, he had a lead role in the indie romance Lovely, Still, opposite Ellen Burstyn.

In addition to Mission Impossible, his TV credits included The Simpsons, Entourage, Without a Trace and Columbo.

Landau studied theater in NY at The Actor's Studio.
