Maplewood graduate dies in plane crash

Federal authorities are investigating after two people were killed Sunday in an airplane crash in Atchison County, Kansas.

FOX 4's Molly Balkenbush spoke to a woman who worked with Bethany Root at the Amelia Earhart airport, where Root was the general manager.

The plane crashed at about 10:15 a.m. near 234th and Ness Road in Atchison County.

There is now no word on what caused the crash or the identities of those killed.

Kansas City's KCTV 5 reports from the Atchison County Sheriff's Office that the plane was piloted by 64-year-old Vlado Lenoch of Burr Ridge, Ill.


The annual festival, held in Atchison, celebrates the famed pilot Earhart, who was born in Atchison, and is the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

The plane left the Amelia Earhart Airport in Atchison around 10 a.m. Sunday and is believed to have crashed shortly after, the sheriff's office said. "I can't speculate. It appears the plane was flying northwest when it crashed".

The plane wa a P-51 Mustang named "Baby-Duck" that flew along the Missouri River in the air show at the Amelia Earhart Festival on Saturday. He was was married and had three children, according to his profile on the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation website.

Root, according to a 2014 profile in the St. Joseph News-Press, followed a love of flying to the St. Joseph area three years ago at the age of 31.

"It's a awful, frightful loss", Pregont said. She worked for the airport's management company, McElwain Sprayers of Wathena, Kan.
