Malaysia's MRT 'on par' with Singapore: PM Najib
17 July 2017, 07:34 | Myron Mathis
Malaysian PM Najib Razak launches Greater KL MRT's second phase, fares to be 50 per cent off until Aug 31
Some of the MyRapid Touch 'n Go card recipients have expressed their happiness at getting the cards in conjunction with the launch of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line.
Liow also said the transport ministry expects the first MRT line will cause the number of vehicles on the Malaysian capital's roads to drop by at least 160,000. "The person said we are better than London, we are better than NY, we are better than Hong Kong, and we are at par with Singapore", he said.
"As Malaysians, we can stand tall today that we have a world class project for the people. We are seeing not just the MRT but the shape of the future of Malaysia before our eyes", Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said in a speech at the opening ceremony.
"A four-coached train will be able to give a comfortable ride to some 1,200 commuters".
He also announced that the MRT1 second phase, running from Muzium Negara to Kajang, will be free for all users for the rest of operations today.
Najib, who is also finance minister, said the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line was completed earlier than the scheduled end of July and had helped to save RM2 billion (US$466 million) from the initial targeted project cost of RM23 billion.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, which was appointed as the official operator of the MRT service in the Klang Valley, said this in a statement.
When the MRT3 or MRT Circle Line is ready, by 2027, we will see a fully-integrated public transportation system in Kuala Lumpur.
Najib said since taking over the leadership of the country, he realised that Kuala Lumpur, as the federal capital, needed an efficient and reliable transportation system network at affordable rates for all the people.
Another LRT line is now under construction and scheduled for completion by 2020, while a second MRT line is expected to be completed by 2022, with a third one targeted for 2027.
Meanwhile, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar described the completion of the MRT project as a gift to the rakyat, especially in Selangor. "So, let us celebrate yet another symbol of a successful public transportation infrastructure", he wrote on his blog.
