Bird swept to pole position earlier in the day, only for a slow start to cause him to drop to second behind Rosenqvist on the opening lap.

DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird finished Sunday's practice session for the second NY ePrix at the top of the timesheets.

The DS Virgin Racing driver clinched his first win in over a year on Saturday, and will start from the front of the grid on Sunday after edging Felix Rosenqvist by less than a tenth in qualifying.

He stayed glued to the Swede's rear bumper, and after a brief full-course yellow interlude thanks to Mitch Evans stopping his Jaguar while running 10th, resumed his attack immediately.

Behind Bird and Vergne, Venturi's Maro Engel took third, 0.002s faster than NEXTEV driver Oliver Turvey, while Nelson Piquet and Dillmann were fifth and sixth behind their teammates.

Heidfeld tried to follow Bird past Rosenqvist when the Briton nicked the lead, and although he failed he shadowed his team-mate throughout.

Red Bull Formula 1 protege Pierre Gasly caught the pair at the end, and the three concertinaed through the final corner - with Gasly throwing his Renault e.dams around the outside of Heidfeld. He did make it across the finish line though, in fourth place.

But Gasly made a mistake and ran wide and damaged the front end of the auto.

Bird held on to win from Jean-Eric Vergne by 1.3 seconds and the Frenchman's Techeetah team mate Stéphane Sarrazin.

Daniel Abt once again out qualified his team-mate Lucas di Grassi, but the Brazilian will be hoping he can make progress through the field from ninth in an attempt to make the most of Sebastien Buemi's absence this weekend. "Hats off to DS Virgin Racing for giving what was the best vehicle they've ever given me".
