Big 12 Football Media Days Begin Today

Big 12 Championship Game Returns for 2017 Season

With both the SEC and ACC finishing up their preseason introductions to the upcoming season, Monday marked Day 1 of the Big 12 Media Days.

"I think we've got a tremendous balance of quality veteran and quality new guys", Bowlsby said.

Oklahoma's David Boren, the only one of the Big 12 presidents who has been in his position since the league's inception two decades ago, was asked during the spring meetings the importance of the CFP when judging the league's success.

"I came up as a wrestler, so I care a lot about the sport", Bowlsby said.

The Big 12 has missed the four-team College Football Playoff in two of its first three seasons, past year essentially dropping from contention in October as a result of a poor showing in nonconference play. It's about winning national championships.

"We had heard from the CFP Selection Committee the fact that we didn't have that 13th data point - the championship game", Bowlsby said. With every other Power 5 conference playing a title game, those participating teams are playing 13 games.

"This didn't come from the conference office, (Oklahoma State wrestling coach) John Smith and our four wrestling coaches are the ones that came to us and said, 'We think this makes some sense, '" Bowlsby said.

Bowlsby said he ran into Stoops last weekend. That's a 15 percent increase from last season, and it doesn't include the third-tier rights each school distributes.

Bowlsby arrived as the Big 12 was coming out of realignment, losing original members Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Texas A&M to other conferences and gaining West Virginia and TCU.

"My health is good, I feel like I'm a pretty young 65".

Stoops' football teams won a record 10 Big 12 championships, including the past two seasons.

Bowlsby, hired in 2012 after working as the athletic director at Stanford, Iowa and Northern Iowa, has been offered a contract extension by the Big 12's board of directors and plans to complete the paperwork soon. Rhule steps in at Baylor, which has debatably been one of the flagship programs in the conference in recent years. I think they believe that I'm the right person to go through the process of looking for the right opportunity and optimizing our opportunity and then capitalizing on it from a financial standpoint.
