Apple shows off new emoji coming to iOS 11, does playful iTunes Movies makeover
The July 17 date was picked because that's the date used in most iterations of the calendar emoji.
Apple just announced it will release a new set of emojis later in 2017, but did not disclose when, exactly, we'll be getting simple image-based ways to say "mind blown" or "I'm breastfeeding right now".
As the world marks World Emoji Day, Apple has revealed its newest ones that focus on the weird and wonderful.
Apple also previewed emoji for food items, such as a sandwich and a coconut.
In celebration of World Emoji Day (which is apparently a thing), Apple has also done a playful makeover of iTunes Movies, as well as highlighting emoji-related apps ... Tim Cook took to Twitter to announce the new addition on World Emoji Day. Other new emoji include animals and mythical creatures, like T-Rex, a zebra, a zombie, and an elf, as well as a star-struck smiley face and an exploding head smiley face.
The new emoji are technically a set of emoji that are launching as part of Unicode 10.0, the standard set for emoticons.
