House minority leader Nancy Pelosi is facing calls from within her own party to step down from the leadership post after a string of special election losses in districts where Democrats had hoped to capitalize on President Donald Trump's sinking popularity.

Pelosi said she respected critical opinions, but, "my decision to stay is not up to them".

But after what happened last week in special congressional elections in Georgia and SC, I'm beginning to think the Democrats are never going to get exhausted of losing. "It's time for a new generation of leadership in the party", Moulton said during an interview Wednesday with CNN's Jake Tapper.

Pelosi said the Democratic base is energised, adding, "We must now put forth our message". Having failed to oust Pelosi in a leadership challenge shortly after the election last fall, Ryan is working with colleagues to see if there's appetite for another attempt at replacing her, he said Thursday on ABC News' "Powerhouse Politics" podcast. Crowley chairs the House Democratic Caucus, and he says it's important to remember that Democrats in those four races were trying to flip Republican strongholds, districts handpicked by the White House as President Trump tapped members of Congress to serve in his administration. Unless the Democrats start winning more than just moral victories against a deeply unpopular president, her days as party leader could be numbered.

Back in 2001 Hoyer and Pelosi faced each other for the top leadership position inside the Democratic caucus, but have largely worked collaboratively in the top two slots for years.

In a press conference Thursday, Pelosi said she's proud of the unity within her party and the leverage it has given her in various negotiations.

Pelosi faces criticism and a new rival, Stephen Jaffe, in her next primary election.

Ryan said Pelosi stands in the way of the party's goal of flipping control of the House back in their favor for the first time since 2010.

Despite - or due to - raising and spending in excess of $30 million and receiving numerous celebrity endorsements, Ossoff dropped the ball in a district that Democrats had convinced themselves was winnable.

So with fresh evidence that tying Ossoff to Pelosi worked, Republicans are promising more of the same next year.

Pelosi went on to condemn Republicans who attack San Francisco. "I welcome the discussion, but I am honored by the support".
