Officer injured, San Francisco mall closed following fight

Brawl Police Response Shuts Down Westfield Mall in San Francisco

San Francisco's Westfield mall was placed on temporary lockdown Sunday after a fight broke out leading to a massive police response.

One video shows an officer swinging what appears to be a nightstick at a young man, while several of his colleagues nearby struggle to subdue another person.

A San Francisco police spokesperson said calls came in around 6:43 p.m. reporting a large fight at the mall.

The first officers to arrive called for backup, Officer Robert Rueca said.

The fight didn't spread onto the streets, but officers were forced to close the mall early. Authorities say that one officer was injured during the incident. As officers attempted to stop the fighting, they were attacked and assaulted. Rueca said a number of people have been detained. According to police, some people resisted arrest and tried to run away.

One officer suffered minor injuries after being pepper-sprayed, police said.

While there is still no indication of what exactly caused the brawl or how many people were involved, police were able to confirm that one person was arrested.

The mall is expected to open on schedule Monday morning.
