Hyderabad to get free internet with over 3000 Wi-Fi hotspots

Telcos to add 2000 public wi-fi spots in Hyderabad by August

The Telegana government has launched the "Hyderabad City Wi-Fi" project and networks have been installed at 1,000 locations in the city.

Peak speeds of 15 Mbps: After the user exhausts his/her free use of 30 minutes, the user can purchase recharge vouchers from kiosks or pay for usage online, just like WiFi in Airports and malls, the spokesperson added. The Wi-Fi speed ranges from 5 to 10 megabytes per second to allow fast data streaming, and the first 30 minutes will be free. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Mayor Bontha Rammohan, who launched the "Hyderabad City Wi-Fi Project" or "Hy-Fi" today, said the internet service will be expanded to 2,000 more locations in the city, taking the total to 3,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in another two months. The Telangana government has launched 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in the capital and would have 2,000 more in the next few months. The project is estimated to cost Rs 300 crore, with investments coming in from the industry, the report added.

The Telangana government chose to expand the "Hyderabad City Wi-Fi" project to over 3,000 locations across Hyderabad following the success of "Digital Telangana" that was launched in 2015. Now, the number of locations have more than doubled and reached about 250 locations and thus, the government mentioned that the plan will now see the number of hotspots growing to over 3000 in Hyderabad. He assured that the city, which has already attained fame for its IT and business-friendly initiatives, will continue to adopt new technologies for the citizens' benefit, especially in making it digitally well connected. The project will also cover areas like Telangana's Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam districts. "We will be talking to them and work on how the whole city can be covered", he said.

Cellular Operators Association of India, the apex industry association of telecom services providers, mobile and internet companies, is the technical adviser to the state government for this project.

Among project partners, Indus Towers will create infrastructure while service providers like Act Fibrenet, Airtel, and BSNL will offer connectivity.
