Tropical storm warning expanded along Gulf Coast

As a tropical weather system moves in, forecasters have increased the amount of total rainfall expected in Southeast Louisiana to 6 to 9 inches through Thursday.

Maximum winds were 40 miles per hour early Tuesday morning, which does meet tropical storm strength criteria.

The National Hurricane Center extended the Tropical Storm warning westward to High Island, TX, and the Tropical Storm Watch from west of High Island to San Luis Pass, TX.

A local marine warning was in effect Sunday as a tropical wave in the northwestern Caribbean impacted the Cayman Islands.

Storm surges are expected of 1 to 3 feet above ground level and possible tornadoes from south-central Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle.

Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center said the Atlantic may have an above-average hurricane season this year, with a 70-percent likelihood of 11 to 17 named storms, of which five to nine could become hurricanes, including two to four major hurricanes. While some tropical storm-force winds may begin reaching coastal areas by Tuesday afternoon, the weather disturbance itself won't move over the state until late Wednesday.

The next storm names on the 2017 list are Bret and Cindy, since Tropical Storm Arlene formed in the Atlantic in April.

Bret is encountering an upper-level trough in the Caribbean, and it will eventually degrade to a tropical depression before dissipating over the western Caribbean.
