Rafael Nadal wins his 10th French Open title after straight sets victory

Nothing went right for the 2015 French Open champion as he lost in straight sets to Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final at Roland Garros. He joins Sampras and Ken Rosewall as the only players to win Grand Slam titles in their teens, 20s and 30s.

His rise in the rankings has been underpinned by a phenomenal clay-court season in which he also took glory in Monte Carlo and Barcelona for the 10th time - no other man has won even one tournament on 10 separate occasions in the Open Era. As his 15th career Grand Slam, it also places him second on the all-time list for men and keeps him within sight of first place, his long-time rival Roger Federer. He's also up to second in the world and nearly 3,000 points clear of Roger Federer in the "Race to London" rankings.

Third seed Wawrinka arrived full of confidence as, at 32, he tried to become the oldest French Open victor since Andres Gimeno in 1972. It was his 18th crown. The four points Nadal won, included two forced errors from Wawrinka and a blistering forehand victor. Nadal hadn't dropped a set the entire tournament, and he continued that ideal streak on Sunday.

Nadal's win-loss record at the French Open, which he won on debut in 2005, now stands at a staggering 79-2.

"It's a feeling that's impossible to describe", Nadal said. "It's aways a honour to play against you", said Wawrinka.

"The feeling I have here is impossible to describe". This match was much closer than the score suggests, as Wawrinka did a very good job keeping up with the best clay court player of all time.

It seemed Wawrinka was going to be in the fight early in the contest, as his second service game went for more than ten minutes, but after six deuces he held serve to make it 2-2 early on.


"The only thing that I know is I am playing well now".

Rafael Nadal had never lost a French Open final heading into his match with Stan Wawrinka on Sunday, and the Spaniard kept his streak alive, defeating Wawrinka in three sets to lift the French Open trophy once again.

Nadal was shown a montage of his 10 victories before the trophy presentation and said the historic nature of the triumph added to his satisfaction.

It is another remarkable achievement for Nadal, whose status as the greatest clay-court player that tennis has ever seen is surely now absolutely guaranteed. Nadal needed just one as he forced Wawrinka wide and the Swiss overcooked his forehand to hand the Spaniard the advantage in the match.

Nadal joined unseeded the 20-year-old Jelena Ostapenko as a 2017 singles champions in Paris after the Latvian came back from a set and 3-0 down against favourite Simona Halep to win the women's final 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday.

But the song remained the same, Nadal taking the set in the ninth game, just moments after Wawrinka, who knocked out world number one Andy Murray in the semis, had destroyed a racquet in utter frustration.
