New Taoiseach announces cabinet reshuffle

Although the dust has barely settled on a leadership campaign that only looked like providing one outright victor, the task of turning around Ireland's deepest problems is still on the horizon for Varadkar and his latest decision to move a number of key ministers to different departments could make or break his future as Dail Eireann's top dog.

But rather surprisingly Varadkar's former rival Simon Coveney, will be the new Minister for Foreign Affairs with special responsibility for Brexit, despite his wish to remain on as housing minister.

"The country may experience an impact on prosperity and trade across the open border as it works towards restoring a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland".

Varadkar becomes the EU's youngest national leader with Jüri Ratas, the 38-year-old Estonian Prime Minister and Emmanuel Macron, 39 of France, joining him as a trio under 40.

"If my election has shown anything, it is that prejudice has no hold in this Republic", he said in his victory speech reported by PinkNews.

When asked whether he believed Ireland should legalise abortion, he simply answered "I do not".

Leo Varadkar will now take over from Enda Kenny, who previously served as the Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) until he announced his retirement in May. Enda Kenny left an administration with five women around the cabinet table; Varadkar's has only four. He studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin and was a member of Young Fine Gael on campus and was elected as a councillor with 5,000 first preference votes a year after he entered politics. "As far as I can see, it hasn't been an issue at all in the leadership contest".

"Irish politicians were among the last sectors of our society to come out of the closet but now at least we've got one gay man and a lesbian, Catherine Zappone, both in the cabinet. It's just part of who I am, it doesn't define me, it is part of my character I suppose". "He is the kind of person who has made me a better person", Varadkar recently said.

He worked as a general practitioner (GP) before winning a seat in Parliament and has rapidly risen through the party ranks, holding several ministerial portfolios including minister for social protection and minister for transport, tourism and sports.
