Protesters Boo British PM During Visit To North London Mosque

London vehicle hits pedestrians police say'number of casualties

London police - already stretched by a series of tragedies including a June 14 high-rise apartment fire in which 79 people are presumed dead and a June 3 terror attack near London Bridge that killed seven people - said they are putting more officers on the street to reassure the public.

The Muslim cleric who prevented the angry worshippers from harming the suspect of the van attack at a mosque in London's Finsbury Park, has been praised for his "bravery and courage".

One neighbour said a man believed to be Mr Osborne had been seen sleeping in a van on Saturday night.

An elderly man died after the attack.

The man, who is in custody at a south London police station, was arrested earlier on suspicion of attempted murder.

"We are massively in shock, it's unbelievable".

The cops have started carrying out searches at an address in the Cardiff area.

"What I can say on this case is this individual, so far as we know at the moment, was not known to us, but we are aware of a rise in the far right, "Wallace told The Guardian".

The imam was hailed as the "hero of the day" by Toufik Kacimi, chief executive of the Muslim Welfare House, outside which the attack took place. Two more people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

United Kingdom prime minister Theresa May branded it a terrorist attack and said the driver had "targeted the ordinary and the innocent going about their daily lives".

ITV News spoke to Osborne's mother, who said: "I'm not going to defend him, but he's my son and it's a bad, awful shock".

She later visited Finsbury Park Mosque and met representatives from a variety of faiths inside. The BBC later also named Obsorne as the alleged driver of the van.

After the London Bridge attack, city mayor Sadiq Khan's office reported a 40-percent increase in racist incidents in the capital and a fivefold increase in anti-Muslim incidents. We treat this as a terrorist attack.

Mother-of-four Nicola Senior, 43, is walking back from taking her children to school when she stops to take in the scene.

He added: "Thank God I just moved to the side, I just jumped".

"I am fearful for my kids".

"As a mum my heart goes out to everyone in Finsbury Park". "It feels like this is happening all the time".

Witnesses said Osborne claimed he wanted to "kill all Muslims" after he drove into a crowd leaving a mosque early Monday morning.

Witness Abdiqadir Warra told Agence France-Presse that some of the victims were carried for several metres along the road by the van.

Some pedestrians pushed the 47-year-old suspect to the ground, and Mahmoud, an imam from the Muslim Welfare House, jumped in and pleaded for calm.

She went on: "This attack targeted the ordinary and the innocent going about their ordinary lives, this time British Muslims as they left a mosque after breaking their fast at this sacred time of year".
