Iran launches missiles into eastern Syria, targets ISIS

Royal Australian Air Force F A-18A Hornets fly in formation after refuelling from a KC-30A on a mission over Syria. Australia has temporarily halted air missions following the shooting down of a Syrian jet by US forces

Five ISIL-linked attackers stormed Iran's parliament and a shrine to revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on June 7, killing at least 17 people and wounding more than 50. Comments by the IRGC and Iranian officials have led many to believe that the move was not only about taking out those Iran blames for the Tehran attack. Russia's defense ministry said it is suspending coordination with the United States in Syria over so-called "de-confliction zones" after the Americans downed a Syrian government fighter jet on Sunday, June 18.

Sharif says the missile launch reflects Iran's "military power" though Iran has no intention of starting another war. The rivals are on opposite sides of violent conflicts in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.

Both the Iranian strikes and the US's downing of the Syrian plane, followed by its tensions with Russian Federation, come as various players in the region jostle and scramble for position to take over territory in the post-ISIS era. Izadi said it was partly intended for a Saudi audience.

"The Guards" missile strike sends multiple messages, said Amir Handjani, a non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council.

The spokesman was apparently referring to U.S. sales of $110 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia during President Donald Trump's visit to the kingdom last month. "The US has always wanted to overthrow the Islamic establishment of Iran".

The Iranian government said it notified Damascus before it fired rockets into the country, but that it "will not be tied to formalities when defending its security and stability".

"Security cannot be traded and those who think they can provide their security by dragging extra-regional countries here are making a stupid strategic mistake", he said.

Iran's Fars News Agency stated the missile was a Zulfiqar, a short range, solid fueled ballistic missile originally based on Chinese technology.

Boroujerdi said the strike marked "a new phase in the fight against terrorism". "Otherwise, you're threatened with the path to hell", according to the Iranian statement.

"The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria". When Iran unveiled the Zolfaghar in 2016, it bore a banner printed with a 2013 anti-Israeli quote by Khamenei saying that Iran will annihilate the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa should Israel attack Iran.

"They don't have the capability to engage in clashes with us for now and of course, we don't intend to involve in clashes with them but we are in permanent rivalry with them in different fields, including the missile sector", he said.
