Democratic union ironworker Randy Bryce running against Ryan

20 June 2017, 10:49 | Charlene Valdez

Regardless of political beliefs though, Ryan's newly introduced challenger Randy Bryce is a formidable everyman of an opponent and his first campaign ad announcing his candidacy for Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District is truly incredible to watch.

In his announcement video, Bryce says that he is the best to represent Wisconsin's 1st district because he is "a working person", and goading Ryan to switch careers with him.

He is political coordinator of Ironworkers Local 8 and actively fought recent measures such as the 2011 Act 10 collective bargaining changes for public workers and the 2015 measure that supporters call a "right-to-work" law, which allows workers to opt out of financially supporting private-sector unions. In addition, Bryce's mother suffers from MS and takes up to 20 medications for her condition, about which he says there is "no doubt in [his] mind the other people don't have what she has". "The system is extremely flawed".

Bryce lost a Democratic primary for state Assembly in 2012 and the general election for state Senate in 2014.

"I chose to run for office because not everybody's seated at the table and it's time to make a bigger table", he continues.

Bryce spoke about his job, family, and being able to "see what people need" in Wisconsin before directly speaking to Ryan.

Two other candidates are challenging Ryan-Democrat David Yankovich, and Republican Paul Nehlen, who ran against Ryan past year.
