Trump Finally Confirms He's Under Investigation on Twitter, of Course

Trump lashes out over probe into possible obstruction of justice

Jared Kushner son-in-law and senior adviser to US President Donald Trump looks on during a meeting between Trump and Republican congressional leaders in the Roosevelt Room at the White House in Washington DC

The message was widely read as confirming a probe of Trump by the special counsel investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA election.

In an interview with NBC's Lester Holt on May 11, Trump said he was "going to fire [Comey] regardless of recommendation" from Rosenstein and Sessions.

In a May 9 memo, Rosenstein lambasted then-FBI Director James Comey for his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

During an early morning tweet storm Friday, President Donald Trump confirmed he is being investigated for firing former FBI Director James Comey.

Trump's tweet Friday morning came after a series of angry tweets Wednesday in which he also complained about a "witch hunt" and criticized the investigation into ties between his campaign and Russia as "a phony collusion with the Russians story".

The US president has denied trying to influence the investigation, but has acknowledged in an interview that Russian Federation was on his mind when he dismissed Comey. Former FBI head Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel a day after a report stemming from the notes was published.

The White House has said the president "has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn".

Mr Trump was not under investigation before Mr Comey's firing, but reportedly is now facing scrutiny for obstruction of justice over the circumstances surrounding the ex-FBI chief's sacking, according to United States media.

Trump on Thursday blasted news reports that he was under criminal investigation as a "witch hunt" against him led by some "very bad" people.

In light of Trump's concern about leaks, it's possible that Rosenstein's Thursday night statement was aiming to appease a president who has himself often criticized the news media for citing unnamed sources. The Justice Department had no comment on Trump's tweet Friday. The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

Until now, the White House has been essentially silent on whether Trump was actually a target of a federal investigation.

Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, also has retained an attorney to represent him. He testified that he leaked information about the notes through a friend to the Times to increase pressure for the appointment of a special prosecutor after he concluded Trump's administration "defamed" him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after his May 9 firing.

The new allegations against Trump centre on his own admission that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation and suggestions he asked several top intelligence officials for their help altering the inquiry's direction. Sad!" he wrote. "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great.
