"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" the President tweeted in the afternoon, as he said the Clintons deserved an obstruction of justice probe. Among other roles, she was an official in the Justice Department's Office of Legal Policy under George W. Bush.

Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller on May 17 as special counsel to head the inquiry into the Russian Federation matter.Rosenstein was also the author of a letter in May to Trump criticizing the performance of FBI Director James Comey. But because none of those positions have been filled by Senate-confirmed people, the job would fall to the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. "FBI director" James Comey in a tweet Friday morning, once again calling the investigation a "witch hunt".

Trump's tweets came after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organization's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

"Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations", Rosenstein said.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

The Washington Post on Wednesday reported that Mueller is investigating the Republican president for possible obstruction of justice.

After the statement, The Post updated the Kushner article so that its first sourcing reference was to "US officials".

President Donald Trump and his son Barron Trump walk to Marine One across the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Saturday en route to Camp David in Maryland. Part of the revelations surrounding the Russian Federation investigation and the firing of Comey has been that Trump repeatedly pushed top intelligence officials to say in public that Trump was not personally under investigation and that there was no evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation in its interference in the 2016 election.

The new development Thursday appears to be that the inquiry has shifted to Mueller.

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe.

Although the White House initially said Rosenstein's memo led Trump to fire Comey, the president later said he did so because of the Russian Federation investigation.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says Americans should "exercise caution" when reading news reports based on anonymous sources.

A day later, Mr Rosenstein appointed Mr Mueller - who was at the helm of the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the September 11 attacks - as special counsel.

Was the Rosenstein memo the reason Comey was sacked? When Comey was deputy attorney general in the Bush administration, he appointed a close friend and former colleague, Patrick Fitzgerald, as special counsel to investigate who leaked the identity of Valerie Plame, a covert Central Intelligence Agency officer.

But Trump is likely to be disappointed if he is ultimately seeking to stop the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI director, according to Cramer and members of Congress.

The Justice Department's investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election is looking at Kushner's multiple roles in the Trump administration, including the Trump campaign's 2016 data analytics operation; his relationship with former national security adviser Michael Flynn; and Kushner's own contacts with Russians, according to USA officials briefed on the probe.
