The man who shot senior Republican congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice session this week had a list containing the names of three politicians, officials said.

"Both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees". Two Capitol Police officers sustained relatively minor injuries.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, a Murphysboro Republican whose 12th Congressional District covers the Belleville area, has said Hodgkinson contacted his offices a number of times, but none of the communication seemed threatening, according to Bost spokesman George O'Connor.

Hodgkinson was politically active, decrying Republican policies and candidates online and in letters to his local newspaper, and volunteering on the presidential campaign of Sen. "We may have our differences but we do well in times like these in times like these that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because above all they love our country", said Trump, speaking from the White House's Diplomatic Room.

After the two became acquainted, Euille said, Hodgkinson started asking about where to go for breakfast, for happy hours in the evening and for weekend activities.

President Donald Trump says that wounded Congressman Steve Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.

A search of online newspapers shows that Hodgkinson frequently wrote letters to his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012.

James Hodgkinson was an ardent Bernie Sanders (I-VT) supporter, and in a speech on the floor, a visibly shaken Senator Sanders declared "violence of any kind is unacceptable".

"Fifty (shots) would be an understatement, I'm quite sure", Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire.

SUZANNE HODGKINSON: I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it. He came to kill Republicans - the more conservative, the better.

Hodgkinson also had arrests in his background for a series of minor offenses and at least one more serious matter.

While trying to drive away from that confrontation, the report said, Hodgkinson used a pocket knife to cut a seat belt.

If he did see the signs, Hodgkinson must not have taken them very seriously.

Fox News reported that it had confirmed the existence of a list found in Hodgkinson's possession, containing names of Republicans.

Experts say far more important factors behind shootings are untreated mental health issues and past histories of violence.

When Hodgkinson refused to stop, Schaumleffel called the sheriff's department. Mark Kern, a former mayor of Belleville and current St. Clair County Board Chairman, described to ABC News how the county had hired Hodgkinson for several years as a contractor to remove lead-tainted paint from middle- and low-income community buildings.

The deputy cautioned Hodgkinson about shooting around homes, given that the rounds can travel up to a mile.
