Giving more details about Trump's meetings with Comey, Spicer said Trump was seeking assurances from the FBI director that he wasn't under investigation because he wanted to fight back against "the narrative" building around the Russian Federation story. Trump told NBC on Thursday that he was looking for an excuse to fire Comey, who was leading an investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

The committee had hoped to hear from Comey in a closed session following his abrupt firing on Tuesday by President Donald Trump.

CNN said Comey is "not anxious about any tapes" Trump may have, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. Thirty-six percent of people said firing Comey made them more confident in the results of the investigation.

"Even that is possible", Mr Trump said. Trump questioned that investigation again Friday morning, calling it a "witch hunt".

Sen. Dick Durbin D-Ill., called Trump "dangerous" on Friday in the wake of Trump's post on Twitter that suggested he taped a conversation with Comey.

Jeff Mason of Reuters, who is president of the White House Correspondents' Association, asked if Trump recorded his conversations with Comey.


"Wolf, the I-word that I think we should use right now is 'investigation, ' and we have investigations in the House, the Senate and the FBI, but hurdles keep getting put up for the investigations", the congressman replied.

Critics have assailed Trump for dismissing the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief just as the agency is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 United States election, and possible Moscow ties to the Trump presidential campaign. Repeatedly, Spicer said he had "nothing further to add on that".

As Mr Trump works to fast-track Mr Comey's successor, lawmakers from both parties urged him to steer clear of any politicians for the job and said he must "clean up the mess that he mostly created".

If Trump did order a recording system installed in the Oval Office - or elsewhere in the White House - it would be the first of its kind since President Richard Nixon.

Trump also disputed the allegations on TV by saying he did not ask Comey to pledge loyalty and only wants him to be honest. That has led to speculation that Trump is considering replacing him. Chris Murphy said Friday could help sway some Republicans to agree to an independent special prosecutor.

Update 2: Meanwhile, the leading Democrats on the House's judiciary and oversight committees demanded in a letter that Trump turn over information about any potential recordings.
