Flynn reportedly told Trump team he was under investigation before inauguration

20 May 2017, 04:49 | Erica Roy

The New York Times published Wednesday another bombshell damaging to the Trump administration, and once again it depends on anonymous sources.

Mr. Flynn's disclosure, on January 4, was first made to the transition team's chief lawyer, Donald F. McGahn II, who is now the White House counsel.

In light of the memo's allegations and the fact that Trump fired Comey days after he requested additional resources for the Trump-Russia probe, the DoJ has appointed a special counsel to lead the investigation and get down to the bottom of all of this - if, in fact, an underlying story exists.

The Justice Department investigation was not seen as disqualifying Flynn from the national security adviser position, people close to the retired Army lieutenant general told Fox News. But the disclosure could increase the pressure on Trump and his aides to provide the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Congress with a full account of interactions with Russian officials and others with links to the Kremlin during and immediately after the 2016 election. Comey, who noted the request in a memo, was sacked by Trump on 9 May.

Ever the paranoiac, Flynn reportedly believes that the investigation into his background is part of a vast conspiracy plot waged against him by whoever's left in government from the Obama administration to keep him out of the White House. Weeks after his firing, Flynn retroactively registered with the Justice Department as a foreign agent.

"Don't approve it", Flynn told Rice, according to two former officials cited in a Washington Post report. The lawyer, William McGinley, was seeking more information about the nature of the group's foreign work and wanted to know whether Flynn had been paid for the op-ed.

This is some transition team Mike Pence ran.

One of those contacts was by Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian oligarch and politician, according to one person with detailed knowledge of the exchange and two others familiar with the issue. Current and former US officials said that, on the calls, Flynn discussed sanctions that the Obama administration had imposed on Russian Federation for disrupting the November election.

The contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian government included at least six phone calls between former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) explained why Vice President Mike Pence, who headed the Trump transition team, may go down with Trump in the Russian Federation scandal if he knew that Mike Flynn was under investigation in January 2017. Maybe they thought Flynn was just joking?
