Duterte says China's Xi threatened war if Philippines drills for oil

20 May 2017, 04:41 | Melissa Porter

Christopher Roberts, Associate Professor at the Australian Defence Force Academy campus of the University of New South Wales said he believes any agreement between China and ASEAN will be "code-of-conduct lite".

Philippine Ambassador to China Jose Santa Romana will lead the Philippine delegation while China's side will be headed by Vice Foreign Minister Liu. We don't want to quarrel with you.

"I said, 'Mr Xi Jinping, I would insist that that is ours and I will drill oil there", Duterte recounted. "And finally that China- unless it stands to benefit- does not intend to respect the rule of law", Del Rosario said.

Despite the general lowering of tensions, Beijing admitted this week it had installed rocket launchers on Fiery Cross Reef, which is administered by China but also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan.

China was enraged by a ruling past year from a Hague tribunal invalidating most of its South China Sea claims in a case brought by the Philippines. The soldiers were reportedly killed when a China-made anti-aircraft cannon malfunctioned during an exercise in the Natuna island chain in the disputed waters.

Inada said two F-15 fighter jets, one E-2C early warning aircraft and an AWACS surveillance plane were sent to the scene.

And in Beijing Friday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with a senior political figure from the Philippines, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, and called for continued improvement of the two nations' relations.

Huang said it likely contains clauses barring the use of force or unilateral changes to facts on the ground, such as the construction of man-made islands by China that it has equipped with airfields and military installations.

Philippine ambassador to China Chito Sta.Romana, said, "That is why the President kept asking the USA ambassador, 'Are you with us or not?' He did not get a clear answer". He has drawn closer to China, in the hopes of attracting billions of dollars in Chinese loans and infrastructure investments.

Today, Duterte said he would be open to exploring the South China Sea's natural resources with rival claimants China and Vietnam.

He said Xi had promised that the arbitration ruling would be discussed in future, but not now.

Reiterating Taiwan's sovereignty over the South China Sea islands, Lin repeated that the negotiations on the disputed region will not be complete without Taiwan's presence.

They exchanged views on "the importance of appropriately handling concerns, incidents and disputes involving the South China Sea", the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that gave few details.

The Philippines, meanwhile, says it will not invoke its legal victory for the time being and will focus on improving mutual trust and confidence.
