Noting that she's been in constant contact with White House staff, Guilfoyle said, "I'm a patriot, and it would be an honor to serve the country".

Guilfoyle's confirmation of the discussions comes at a time of persistent speculation that Mr Trump was looking to clean out his communications team, with the President reportedly blaming Mr Spicer for much of the negative media fallout from his decision to sack Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Guilfoyle, 48, is a former San Francisco and Los Angeles prosecutor who was married for four years to California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.

She was reportedly considered for press secretary during the transition, although Spicer ultimately beat her out. "I think it'd be a fascinating job ... you need someone really determined and focused, a great communicator in there with deep knowledge to be able to handle that position".

"I actually said today, let's not ever do any more press briefings", Trump said during an interview with Fox News's Jeanine Pirro last week. But saying it would be "tough to beat" is hardly backing down from her statement in the interview, in which she pretty clearly stated that even though she loved Fox, she'd totally leave for a White House job.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Yeah, he is, sure. "And they'll be in the room, and you have to see, the way they ask questions, I want, I want, screaming and there's never been anything like this".

"Kimberly is a valued member of the FOX News primetime lineup, and is under a long-term contract with the network".

The New York Times first reported Friday that her name had surfaced once again as a potential White House spokeswoman.

Three days later in the Fox News studios, Guilfoyle claimed that description matches her.

'You've got to insist on getting in front of POTUS, talk to him, and have like five, six minutes with him before you go out there and take the podium.

But Trump's patience with his communications team has waned since last week, when Spicer and others failed to deliver a succinct message to the media after learning that the president had sent a termination letter to FBI Director James Comey. "It has to be someone with a very close by relationship, where there's trust there, there's inborn loyalty, someone who's been there from the start", adds Kimberly Guilfoyle.

'He's dedicated himself to this public service.

"I think I have a very good relationship with the president", Guilfoyle said.
