Rep. Jason Chaffetz is not running for re-election

21 April 2017, 03:16 | Erica Roy

On Tuesday, Democrat Jon Ossoff fell a few percentage points short of an outright victory amid an 18-candidate scramble in Georgia's 6th Congressional District . FILE - In this February 9, 2017, file photo, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah speaks during a town hall meeting at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. He said he got a call from Chaffetz Tuesday night about his plans.

After taking over as chairman January 2015, Chaffetz pressed the Obama administration on issues including the breaches of OPM data revealed in that year, and controversies at the IRS, Secret Service, EPA and other agencies. 'In the meantime I still have a job to do and I have no plans to take my foot off the gas'.

Chaffetz has said in past interviews including one with the Deseret News in January 2016 that he was interested in leaving Capitol Hill to pursue the Utah Governor's mansion.

Share your reactions to this story with me - is Chaffetz right to move on? 'I will continue to weigh the options, but I might depart early'. "Undoubtedly, he will appreciate being able to spend more time here in the great state of Utah". "Part of the backlash that Chaffetz felt came from a bill he put forth to basically get rid of 3-million acres of land from federal land to Colorado and he got so much public blow-back that he actually had to withdraw that bill".

More sinister theories have Chaffetz preparing to face indictment over unsubstantiated ties to Russian Federation, or public embarrassment related to his committee's investigation into the 2012 Benghazi terror attack.

The Utah Republican, who has been floated as a potential candidate for Senate or governor, did not close the door to another run for public office in his Wednesday statement.

He told a local radio station later Wednesday that he hasn't ruled out a future run for political office.

The Utah Republican was first elected in 2008 to represent Utah's 3 District.

Chaffetz attained national political stardom at the helm of several investigations into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, and has stood out among Republicans in Congress for his staunch, often casual defense of Donald Trump, amid concerns that Trump's ongoing ties to his businesses pose an ethical conundrum-often from his own party. The NRCC is very confident in our ability to keep this seat red in November 2018. This will end his tenure as the House oversight committee chairman.

"Let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives", Chaffetz continued.

However, he has been confronted with an unexpected challenge from Democratic newcomer Kathryn Allen. For now at least, Jason Chaffetz is preparing to enter the private sector when his current term expires, Fox News reports.

However, Chaffetz has seen the writing on the wall and understands that 83-year-old Sen.
