One police officer was killed and two were injured when a gunman opened fire on the famed Champs-Élysées shopping district in Paris, French officials said.

"It looks like another terrorist attack".

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said just before the news conference began that Trump had been briefed on the shooting that happened while he was meeting with the Italian prime minister. "I just saw it as I was walking in, so that's a awful thing", Trump said.

"We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant".

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told the AP that an attack took place near Franklin Roosevelt subway station on Thursday night.

France has tightened security measures in advance of its presidential election on Sunday, and police say they thwarted a terror attack early in the week.

One eyewitness said a man got out of a vehicle and began shooting "with a Kalashnikov", hitting a policeman.

At approximately 5:30 p.m.

According to a document obtained by Reuters Police have issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect in the shooting.

The shooting has not officially been declared a terrorist act but anti-terrorist forces are leading the investigation, French President François Hollande said.

ISIS has claimed credit for the attack.
