You can help name April the giraffe's calf

Adventure Park in Binghamton N.Y. a giraffe named April stands with her new calf on Saturday

The contest to name April's giraffe calf is underway after the birth of the animal went viral this year, according to statement from the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York. Numbers continued to grow as viewers waited impatiently for baby, and peaked when April delivered her male calf on Saturday. Internet explorers around the world were able to watch the astonishing capabilities of nature via live stream, and the zookeepers at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, say that they'll be holding a contest to determine the new giraffe's name.

Animal lovers and April the giraffe's fans have devoted months of their time watching April's every move since Animal Adventure Park has put up a live stream video showing the 15-year-old giraffe's pregnancy journey. Zoo owner Jordan Patch said both mom and calf were doing fine.

YouTube said Monday that April the giraffe's livestream is officially the second-most-watched live channel in company history.

"April has recovered perfectly and is eating everything in sight!"

Animal Adventure park is now closed to the public and will open in mid-May. After those 10 days the zoo will reveal the top 10 most popular entries, and then open up voting on those names for an additional five days.

Patch said the natural curiosity surrounding giraffes and their birthing process was a huge factor in drawing crowds. You even get to decide your own spelling.

April the giraffe brings up the baby, with no help from her beau Oliver. People around the world have been tuning in daily.

Giraffes have one of the longest gestation periods of any animal, about 15 months.

At least 1.2 million people watched the Adventure Park's YouTube streaming of the event.

The newborn is April's fourth calf but Animal Adventure Park's first giraffe calf.
