United Launch Alliance Successfully Launches OA-7 under first RapidLaunch™ Service Contract

WATCH: NASA Livestreams 360-Degree View Of Rocket Launch

More than 7,600 pounds of science research, crew supplies and hardware for the space laboratory, according to NASA. His flight helped to define America's position in the space race and paved the way for America's space program, from moon missions, to the space shuttle and the International Space Station.

Orbital ATK's unmanned cargo ship blasted off Tuesday for its seventh resupply mission to the International Space Station.

Launch Notes: This mission marks the third time ULA's Atlas V has launched Orbital ATK's Cygnus™ spacecraft on its way to the ISS. The scientific experiment "Saffire-III" is to be carried out. Anyone using a personal computer, tablet, or smartphone had access to the 360-degree view, along with the ability to manipulate the video, altering the perspective to place themselves close to the rocket as it lifted off, launch commentator George Diller said. In addition, a NanoRacks deployer will release four cubesats used for weather monitoring and global ship tracking. This specific experiment will also test the performance of different heat shield materials that may be used on future US space missions.

Other investigations to be supported by the latest Cygnus mission include the CLYC Crystal Growth experiment, which aims to discover the conditions for the development of defect-free crystals, and the Thermal Protection Material Flight Test and Reentry Data Collection investigation. Cygnus consists of a common Service Module (SM) and a Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM).

"We are carrying more this time than we have in the past and that's a good step forward for us and for the crew", Frank Culbertson, president of Orbital ATK's Space Systems Group, told reporters during a pre-launch news conference.

NASA has scheduled to launch a spacecraft Cygnus Cargo to the International Space Station today. The company manufactured a 10-foot diameter composite heat shield for the launch vehicle, using advanced fiber placement manufacturing techniques at its Iuka, Mississippi facility.

ULA's next launch is the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-M (TDRS-M) mission for NASA, scheduled for August 3 from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
