USA to Enhance Military Presence in Asia Pacific - Vice President Pence

United States Vice President Mike Pence has arrived in Japan for the second leg of his four-nation Asia tour.

But Pence also warned that "those who would challenge our resolve or our readiness should know: We will defeat any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response".

He said rolling back the hostile USA policy towards the DPRK "is the precondition to solving all the problems in the Korean Peninsula".

This April 15, 2017 picture released from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on April 16, 2017 shows Korean People's ballistic missiles being displayed through Kim Il-Sung square during a military parade in Pyongyang marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of late North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung.

"If the United States is reckless enough to use military means it would mean from that very day, an all-out war". However, an official told AP on condition of anonymity that the missile was a Scud variety which the U.S. calls a KN-17. "It doesn't make any difference if it does or not - North Korea is a problem, the problem will be taken care of", Trump said.

After meeting with Abe, Pence held talks with Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso on a new U.S. -Japan "economic dialogue" to be led by the two.

Deputy U.N. Ambassador Kim said North Korea's policy is shaped by the Trump administration's push for "high-intensity sanctions" against the country, deploying tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea and launching military action aimed at "beheading" the North's leadership headed by Kim Jong Un.

Pence also said the USA would protect freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, where Beijing is entangled in territorial rows with several southeast Asia nations.

Pence struck a stern tone as he began talks with Abe and other Japanese leaders after arriving at a US naval base from South Korea.

Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the US, adding his country's "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang was over. But it remains unclear what might come next.

In 1994, the North Korean government agreed to shut down its nuclear development program.

The Trump administration has signaled a more forceful USA stance toward North Korea's recent missile tests and threats, including a warning from Trump that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has "gotta behave".

Mr Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearising the peninsula.

Dialogue and consultation are the only way to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue, said Lu, reaffirming China's stance.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov condemned North Korea's "reckless nuclear actions" in comments on April 17, but said he hoped the United States would not take "very risky" unilateral military action against Pyongyang.
