Supporters, opponents square off on gas tax debate — IN Focus

20 April 2017, 07:02 | Erica Roy

House Speaker Jay Lucas and a large bipartisan group of House lawmakers held a press conference Tuesday criticizing the Senate's inaction on the infrastructure funding bill and also McMaster's threat to veto the legislation.

In response to public criticism, including pushback from the state's police chiefs, bill sponsor Sen.

Earlier this month, Senate Judiciary Chairman Greg Steube had told the Herald/Times he wasn't giving up on holding a hearing for some of his more controversial gun bills this year, which proposed to eliminate some "gun-free" zones in Florida.

The bill would still allow homeowners' associations to prohibit Airbnb rentals.

The Senate's chief blocker, Republican Tom Davis of Beaufort, insists no additional money should go to the DOT until legislators eliminate the DOT commission, which they pick, and the governor's office has full oversight.

Last session, Texas approved open carry of handguns but only for Texans with concealed carry licenses.

No action was taken on the gas tax bill, so the Senate will reconvene Thursday at 10am. Either a close family member or a police officer could request the protection order.

"This has probably become the most complicated subject bill this session", said Rep. Jared Moskowitz.

With the state facing a $3 billion budget deficit, Spicka believes there are real threats to public education that need immediate attention. There are 16 CCOs across the state, some are nonprofit and some, like the Umpqua Health Alliance, are for-profit. He's part of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws-or NORML.

"We will refuse to play petty politics over policy as the Senate did previous year", Lucas said. He said it's irrelevant whether a CCO is for-profit or nonprofit.

"If it doesn't, the bill dies", Bissonette said.

"It's not about, yet again, restructuring some state government agency".

Kruse said too often the rules, modified repeatedly over time, end up looking nothing like the legislation they are supposed to implement.

He's disappointed none of the three bills will move forward.

"Why aren't we just getting legal 2000s so there can be a mental evaluation?"

"When we increase access to contraception, we reduce the risk of unplanned pregnancies", said Sen. Get email alerts from KSAT12 today. "My only ask is that the floor gets the opportunity to debate it and vote on it". A similar measure is pending in the House.

Advocates have expressed concern that the House proposal doesn't honor the spirit of the amendment, and point to restrictions - like the 90-day waiting period and smoking prohibition - as examples to back up their claims.
