Soyuz space capsule carrying American, Russian blasts off

20 April 2017, 03:14 | Justin Tyler

An American and Russian blasted off in a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on April 20.

NASA's Jack Fischer and Russia's Fyodor Yurchikhin lifted off from the Russia-leased launch facility in Kazakhstan at 1:13 p.m. (0713GMT, 3:13 a.m. EDT).

While it is Yurchikin's fifth mission to the space station, Fischer is on his first.

Fischer said he suspects the biggest challenge he faces in his first voyage into space will be learning how to use the station's zero-gravity toilet.

"It's all about suction, it's really hard", Mr Fischer told NASA in an interview before the launch from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome. Russian Federation is scaling back space station staffing until its long-delayed science laboratory is flown to the orbiting outpost next year.

Soyuz crewmate Yurchikhin has made four previous spaceflights. The others are Russia's Oleg Novitskiy and France's Thomas Pesquet. On that day, Whitson, the first woman to command the International Space Station, will have spent 535 days in space, more time than any other American astronaut. Jeffrey Williams now holds the record.

The 43-year-old might want to seek some advice from fellow NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who is going to receive an out-of-this-world call from President Donald Trump on Monday after beating a special record.
