Serena Williams is 20 weeks pregnant

20 April 2017, 05:25 | Myron Mathis

Serena Williams intends to return to tennis in 2018 after her pregnancy was confirmed late on Wednesday night.

Williams' Snapchat post, quickly highlighted in USA media, showed the 35-year-old in a yellow swimsuit that revealed an apparent baby bump.

Williams's pregnancy was confirmed after a wild day of speculation that began when a photograph was posted on Williams' Snapchat story, perhaps inadvertently, that showed her posing sideways in a yellow bathing suit with what looked like a baby bump.

Serena Williams now holds the title for the most Grand Slam wins with 23 titles, the most for any player man or woman.

She announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in December and has not played on tour since her grand slam success Down Under, when she overtook Steffi Graf to claim the outright Open era record for slam singles titles.

If Williams is indeed 20 weeks into her term, that would mean she was approximately two months pregnant when she captured her record 23rd Grand Slam tournament title at the Australian Open in January.

On the other hand, USTA tweeted, "The GOAT (greatest of all time) herself @serenawilliams took to Snapchat to announce she's 20 weeks pregnant!"

Williams, 35, is already known around the world for her dominance of women's tennis, but pregnancy would make her even more likeable in the eyes of the wider public, experts in the sponsorship industry said.

Williams' apparent announcement quickly became big news. So yes, technically, Serena Williams won the Australian Open while carrying a child. "A pregnant woman dominated them". She added that Williams will not play again this year but was looking forward to doing so in 2018.

Do you ever have any question about anything you wish to ask and get answer? This includes three Grand Slams - the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

Her management told Reuters the American planned on returning to the tour next year - months after Williams turns 36 in September.

Australians Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court also won Grand Slam titles after having children.

Victoria Azarenka is a useful guide. Her inactivity saw her drop to second in the world rankings, but she was poised to return to regain the top spot from Germany's Angelique Kerber on Monday.
