Williams' Snapchat post, quickly highlighted in United States media, showed the 35-year-old American in a yellow swimsuit with a baby bump.

But the post was quickly taken down, lending an air of mystery to its meaning. Serena Williams seemed to announce she's pregnant in a Snapchat photo earlier today (April 19) that she's since deleted.

She announced in late December that she was engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

In a 2013 Rolling Stone interview, Williams alluded to Sharapova's "boring" expressions of happiness in her new relationship with a man she described as having a "black heart". "@SerenaWilliams and @AlexisOhanian are expecting a baby this fall".

If the snap was an announcement of firsts, Williams is expecting her first child with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, whom she got engaged to late past year.

For fans and friends the announcement underscored Williams' superwoman status.

"There's gonna be a baby GOAT". Let that sink in.

With 24, Court has one more Grand Slam singles title to her name than Williams (though only 11 of those were won during the Open era).

Australians Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court also won grand slam titles after having children. Last month, the world No 2 pulled out of Indian Wells and Miami, citing a knee injury. Her ranking projects to finish this season somewhere outside the top 20.

Williams will take maternity leave for the rest of 2017 after the superstar's management confirmed she was expecting her first child in the northern hemisphere autumn. Kim Clijsters retired briefly to start a family, then came back to action and won Grand Slam titles.

Williams, 35, withdrew from ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami last month citing a knee injury; she won the Australian Open by beating sister Venus on January 28. Victoria Azarenka, a former No. 1 player and a two-time Grand Slam titlist, left the circuit in June and gave birth to a son, Leo, in December.

"At the same table we first met by chance this time he made it not by chance but by choice", she wrote.

Would it be a 24th Grand Slam in France 2018? "A VERY special year ahead for @serenawilliams So happy for her new journey".
