Oh, baby: Serena Williams won the Australian Open while she was pregnant

20 April 2017, 07:19 | Erica Roy

The confirmation came hours after the 35-year-old athlete posted a picture of herself in a yellow one-piece swimsuit on the photo-sharing site Snapchat with the caption: "20 weeks".

As the New York Daily News points out, Williams was apparently a few weeks pregnant in January when she beat her sister Venus to win the Australian Open.

A number of players stand to benefit from Williams' absence for the remainder of the year, including German Angelique Kerber who last year unseated the American from the top of the world rankings.

One of the world's most famous tennis players sparked speculation Wednesday she is expecting her first child.

She confessed, however, that she and Ohanian have yet to make wedding plans. "From a size change difference, it might take longer for that to be an issue with her, depending on how she carries", said Pivarnik, who has studied the impact of pregnancy on exercise for the past three decades.

If Williams is pregnant, the timing would be a bit of a surprise.

Williams announced their impending nuptials on Reddit, and Ohanian doubled down on his Facebook page, linking to her Reddit post and adding, "She said yes". She pulled out of Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid, citing knee trouble, and in early March, I speculated whether the lack of tournament play would hurt her chances in the French Open. It's also possible she did know and was experiencing morning sickness, but either way all the medical thinking is that unless you've got some underlying condition you can do most anything while pregnant.

Williams has remained active in her pregnancy.

For Williams, who commands almost $29 million in salary and sponsorship earnings, becoming pregnant makes her all the more attractive to corporate sponsors, industry executives said.

Williams, who is second only to Margaret Court on the list of women's all-time grand slam singles titles, has received congratulatory messages from around the world. One woman's pregnancy may floor her for the whole nine months while another's may not interfere with picking up an Olympic gold medal or winning a tennis Grand Slam.
