Mark Zuckerberg's Next Big Bet: Making The Real World An Extension Of Facebook

Eventually we'll use glasses for AR. That'll let us play a game of chess with a distant friend using a seemingly real chessboard

Facebook expects to turn artificial intelligence and virtual and augmented reality into viable parts of its business over the next decade.

"The new camera technology lets you move around within the video scene and experience the content from different viewing angles", said Facebook in a blog post.

"Over time, I think this is going to be a really important technology that changes how we use our phones", Zuckerberg predicted.

The concept of "Full AR" was introduced, which Abrash defines as "glasses that enhance your hearing and vision seamlessly, make you smarter and more capable, and that are light, comfortable, stylish, power efficient, and socially acceptable enough to be a constant part of your life".

After finalizing their avatar, users can then hang out with the avatars of up to three of their friends within the virtual reality environment created by Facebook Spaces. The app lets users enter VR world where they find a cartoon avatar that acts as a guide.

That's especially true for the Spaces app, since relatively few of Facebook's 1.9 billion members are using Oculus's VR headset, which sells for about $500 and requires an expensive computer to make it work.

New parametric Messenger codes will help discovery in the physical world, giving people the option to scan Messenger Codes through the Messenger camera and link to their favourite brands and businesses. But advances in image and object recognition, along with the ubiquity of smartphone cameras, "has put us on the course to bring augmented reality", Kirkpatrick said in an interview. The apps that are built for the Facebook Camera today could wind up as the first versions of the apps you'd use with those glasses. It took Facebook more than two hours to take down footage of the grizzly murder of 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr committed by Stephens. Messenger has also got a new AI assistant called M that will provide assistance to users regarding a specific topic that is being discussed in the chat window or a group. That raised questions about Facebook's ability to monitor gruesome material on its site.

SIEGEL: That's Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Facebook. As The New York Times notes, Zuckerberg has always been disappointed that Facebook never built a credible smartphone operating system of its own.
