Utah Rep. Chaffetz says he won't run for re-election

The national attention around that flub helped Kathryn Allen, a Democrat who announced a challenge to Chaffetz, raise hundreds of thousands of dollars online for her long-shot bid.

James Evans, Chair of the Utah Republican Party, says Utah's race won't be so contested. Chaffetz told Wright political rancor didn't have anything to do with his decision. I preach that you want to get in, serve and get out. "I may run again for public office, but not in 2018", he said.

"I have no ulterior motives".

"I'm not going to be here forever", Chaffetz said of Washington.

In a surprising and stunning move, the powerful Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Jason Chaffetz, has just announced he will not run for re-election.

He won past reelections with comfortable margins, representing a strongly Republican district in Utah. He declined to investigate Trump's massive business interests despite promises to ferociously continue investigating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton following an investigation into her use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state.

As oversight chairman, Chaffetz led investigations into the Secret Service and Planned Parenthood in recent years.

Throughout his tenure in Congress he was known as a forceful foe when it came to incidents of government waste and severely lambasted those he felt guilty of such taxpayer abuse when they appeared before him during hearings.

His likely Democratic challenger next fall is political newcomer and family physician Dr. Kathryn Allen, who had an uphill battle in the red district, has already raised over $560,000 for her campaign, an nearly unprecedented sum for a non-incumbent congressional campaign 18 months away from election day.

"I'm saddened to learn that Jason Chaffetz won't be seeking re-election in 2018". They have three children together. He played on the football team at Brigham Young University, a school where he converted to both the Mormon faith and the GOP.

"There's no question getting out of Congress, shedding the Trump baggage and coming back here and shoring up support for what could be a hard 2020 primary is really the best option", Gehrke concluded. He first entered the political arena in 2003, serving as former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr.'s campaign manager and chief of staff for two years, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008, where he's remained ever since.

She said Wednesday that "nothing has changed" for her run with Chaffetz dropping out.
