Free Fire Alarms for some in State
20 April 2017, 03:08 | Melissa Porter
The Home Fire Preparedness Campaign will teach residents what they can do in case of a fire and install smoke alarms where needed.
Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshall Mike Chaney says properly working smoke alarms are crucial in preventing fire-related deaths.
Davis goes on to say any smoke alarm must be changed after 10 years. Chaney says in the past eight years, the number of those deaths has been reduced by almost 36 percent.
The Evansville Fire Department says people need to make sure their smoke alarms are working so they can help save lives. "We welcome this partnership with Vision 20/20 and thank them for providing these vital devices".
Participating organizations are trying to install at least 250 smoke alarms throughout the day, and in some residential areas volunteers will be going door-to-door.
The smoke alarms being distributed have specially-made batteries that only fit in the smoke alarms, so they can not be used to replace batteries in other appliances. The batteries are also made to last for 10 years.
A man has been rescued after a neighbour raised the alarm about a fire in his house in Banbury.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be tested once a month and replaced every 10 years.
