Formula One: More problems for McLaren as Hamilton tops testing

20 April 2017, 07:10 | Charlene Valdez

Hamilton, who will be replaced by his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas for the concluding day of the in-season test on Wednesday, finished more than half a second clear of Ferrari test driver Antonio Giovinazzi, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo third.

Over the years, nothing changes. The Finn was notably disconsolate after the race, which saw him claim his second podium finish.

"So far we had an internal struggle", Wolff continued.

"I don't know why the pace is so poor". I don't know what to say, but that's not why we exist. Then you see what we did in the race.

"But Russia is a completely different circuit, with different tarmac, different temperatures, track layout, so any small gain we can get, even if its hundreds or an upgrade we can bring and get one or two tenths of a second that would be a massive help". Today, I lost a position at the start - exclusively my fault - and then you've got the time lost in the pit lane.

"You practise, and practise, and practise, and you only have 20 opportunities and when you f*** it up, man, it is painful". I try to handle it the best way I can, but it eats you up a little bit inside and you have just got to end up trying to cope and move forward.

"I think, overall, this was the best weekend for me with the team, but there is much more to come".

"That is the interesting question that we need to analyse at the moment and I don't want to pre-empt what the consequences will be, or if there will be consequences". Every year my goal is to increase the number of awesome races so minimize how many dips you have through the year.

"It was really hard to follow but we generally had similar pace".

Bottas concedes the opening three rounds have been a fair reflection on the general pace of the front-runners, with Mercedes on top in qualifying before losing out to Ferrari on race pace. "I plan to bring it back up at the next one".
