Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez dead after hanging himself in pirson cell

20 April 2017, 01:40 | Laverne Osborne

You can't forcibly hang someone from a bed sheet in a prison cell, can you?

Baez's surprise that Hernandez would actually commit suicide is shared by the former tight end's representative, Brian Murphy, who couldn't make sense of the news because he thought it was something Hernandez would never do. They reported finding no suicide note. He was in a single cell in a general population unit in the maximum-security state prison.

"There's more ... WBZ also cites sources who say there's evidence Hernandez smoked synthetic marijuana shortly before his death".

A prison spokesman told the Boston Globe that Hernandez had not been on a suicide watch and did not indicate that he meant to harm himself. "If there had been concerns, Hernandez would have been on mental health watch in a different part of the prison, the spokesperson said".

His death marks one of the most dramatic falls from grace by an athlete in recent memory, and comes the same day that many of his former teammates visit the White House as Super Bowl champions.

"I know that's going to be hard for a lot of people to swallow but if you die during an appeal in MA, the appeal of a criminal case, the conviction is vacated", Elikann said. "He says that only God has the right to take somebody's life, and it's very painful to him when somebody takes his own life".

He was, however, convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and received another four to five years in prison, on top of the life sentence. "I was absolutely shocked".

"I just think it got to him - the guilt", Mixson Philip said. He was a relatively popular guy, obviously.

"I don't believe that he would have killed himself", he added.

Hernandez hanged himself with his bedsheet, authorities said.

Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez looks at the prosecutor during his murder trial at the Bristol County Superior Court in Fall River, Massachusetts, March 3, 2015.

Hernandez was serving a life sentence without possibility of parole for the 2013 slaying of Odin Lloyd.

The death of the former National Football League star comes less than a week after he was acquitted in a 2012 double slaying.

Hernandez was moved to tears on Friday after he was acquitted of the 2012 fatal shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston. As the jury was deliberating, cameras spied Hernandez blowing kisses to the young daughter he fathered with fiancée Shayanna Jenkins.

Jose Baez said that there is no way that Hernandez would have killed himself.
