Islamic State says no fighter killed by mother of all bombs

Afghan MOAB Bomb Attack: One from Kerala among 36 IS men dead

Sources said that the hideout has been severely damaged in the strike, rendering it useless. Just last week a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier, Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar, 37, of Edgewood, Maryland, was killed in action in Nangarhar.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday criticized the Afghan and US governments for the attack in Nangarhar.

President Trump called the operation "very, very successful mission".

President Ashraf Ghani threw his support behind the bombardment.

More than 1,900 IS militants, several Afghan security forces and two USA soldiers have been killed in Achin and neighboring districts since early 2015 when IS emerged there, according to Afghan military officials.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, said the decision to drop the bomb "sends a clear message that the United States is committed and determined to defeating ISIS and other terrorist organizations in Afghanistan".

Residents in Afghan villages near the target area felt Thursday's powerful strike. "We thought it had happened right in front of our house", he said. Deptula said the MOAB was designed to create over-pressure to collapse caves and a blast effect over about a mile on soft-to medium ground.

"We were unable to see each other at home because of the excessive dust inside the room", he said.

The massive bomb was dropped after fighting intensified over the past week and US-backed ground forces struggled to advance on the area.

Locals told CNN that more than 3,000 families had fled the district in the past year or so since the militant group established its presence. The target was close to the Pakistani border. The rocky landscape is dotted with caves and defensive tunnels, making it easy to hold and hard to attack, according to Nic Robertson, CNN's global diplomatic editor, who has reported from the Afghan mountains. The U.S. has more than 8,000 USA troops in Afghanistan, training local forces and conducting counterterrorism operations.

Peters, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, says he has not been briefed yet on this week's bombing in Afghanistan.

The Taliban "control or contest" about a third of the population of the country, Bergen said, citing senior U.S. military officials.

"If this was a use of the weapon in order to deal with entrenched forced that would present a threat to American servicemen and women who are serving in Afghanistan, certainly that type of activity would be warranted". The MOAB and the MOP owe their origins to massive "Tallboy" and "Grand Slam" bombs developed by the British in World War Two for use against Nazi targets such as V-1 and V-2 missile sites and the battleship Tirpitz. The target set has been expanded to include targets buried under softer surfaces, such as caves or tunnels.
