Bill O'Reilly quits Fox News

20 April 2017, 07:01 | Laverne Osborne

O'Reilly's ouster is the network's second major prime-time shake-up in recent months. Its leading female star, Megyn Kelly, also decamped for NBC in January.

Yet the allegations against O'Reilly fit into an uncomfortable narrative for the cable news network.

That certainly could happen, though it probably won't be easy.

NY magazine reported Wednesday, based on unnamed sources, that Rupert Murdoch and sons James and Lachlan, who run Fox parent 21st Century Fox, had decided that O'Reilly was out and executives were planning the exit.

"Fox News released an exclusive preview of his soon-to-be replacement", Kimmel added.

With a profit centre gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell nearly 1% on Wednesday in heavy trading.

Following the Times story, 21st Century Fox said it had asked the same law firm that investigated Ailes to look into O'Reilly's behavior.

Starting Monday, Carlson's show will be followed at 7 p.m. MDT by "The Five", relocating from its afternoon slot. While O'Reilly denied wrongdoing, dozens of his show's advertisers fled within days even as O'Reilly's viewership increased.

O'Reilly - who has denied the claims - has been off the air since last week, when he announced he would be taking a vacation.

During an appearance on Fox News' newly-branded "The Factor", former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee use a poorly-timed analogy to describe Donald Trump's apparent inability to "get a fair shake from the media", comparing it with one's inability to "kiss a woman leaning away from you".

It is the end of an era here at the Fox News Channel. Fox owns 39 percent of European TV giant Sky, and has long wanted to take over the whole company.

"Bill O'Reilly has been subjected to a brutal campaign of character assassination that is unprecedented in post-McCarthyist America", Marc Kasowitz said in a statement.

Carlson sued Roger Ailes, alleging harassment and retaliation, in July, 21st Century Fox reached a $20 million settlement with her and issued a public apology.

"I understand how hard this has been for many of you", Rupert Murdoch said in the memo.

Following The New York Times report that exposed these incidents, O'Reilly pleaded innocent via a statement on his website, while ignoring the topic on air.

In a Wednesday memo to employees signed by all three Murdochs and provided to The Associated Press, Fox again emphasized its commitment to a workplace culture of "trust and respect". "That's bigger than O'Reilly", he said.

Embattled Fox News host Bill O'Reilly had a brief handshake with Pope Francis on Wednesday as sexual harassment allegations dog him at home.

Mediaite reports that after O'Reilly's firing, USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers said Ailes had defended the host when she complained about him thanking her for her "blonde-ness".

"I don't think Bill did anything wrong", President Trump told the Times in an interview earlier this month.
