Apple to Dismantle Iconic Glass Cube at Fifth Avenue Store

The City of NY approved plans to remove Apple's "Glass Cube" structure at its Fifth Avenue flagship store, according to building permits published by BuildZoom.

The $2 million job requires a site safety manager with the removal to be done by Englewood, NJ-based Waldorf Exteriors. The contractor-recommendation website BuildZoom first spotted the filings.

While losing the glass staircase, which is nearly as famous as the cube, might seem unlikely, we've already seen Apple use a Jony Ive-designed ceramic staircase in its Nanjing store in China.

Apple representatives did not respond to USGNN.com™'s request for comment as of press time.

All have signed documents saying they would not discuss the project, one executive admitted before hanging up.

Apple is expanding its flagship location from 32,000 square feet to 77,000 square feet, as The Real Deal originally reported. The agency issued the permit for the work on April 17.

For those wondering, the Fifth Avenue location will be closed during the renovation and Apple has temporarily located only a few steps away to the former location that housed FAO Schwarz.

The delicate glass cube removal is believed to be part of general renovations and expansion of the underground store.
