Aaron Hernandez found hanged in cell

Aaron Hernandez, the ex-NFL star and convicted killer who fell from grace amid a pair of murder trials, hanged himself to death inside his MA prison cell early Wednesday, officials said.

Investigators said Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit when he was found.

The legal "technicality", as Elikann puts it, is called the Abatement Doctrine and allows prisoners to quite literally die to get away with murder - if a convicted murderer suffers an untimely death or commits suicide as in Hernandez' case prior to exhausting their appeals, the conviction is automatically vacated, Elikann said. The one-time tight end was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later.

According to department spokesperson Christopher Fallon, the former tight end tied a bed sheet to the cell window to hang himself.

Hernandez had reportedly "attempted to block his door with various items", according to the statement. Hernandez had been serving a sentence of life in prison without parole after being convicted of the June 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd.

A spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Correction told ABC News there was no prior concern Hernandez was suicidal, otherwise he would have been on mental health watch in a different part of the prison.

The families of Aaron Hernandez's three alleged victims say they'll keep trying to get their share of his National Football League millions.

Meanwhile, Fallon confirmed there was no sign of a suicide note and officials had no reason to believe Hernandez might take his life. "There were no conversations or correspondence from Aaron to his family or legal team that would have indicated this scenario was a possibility".

The attorney, Jose Diaz, said he did not believe Hernandez committed suicide.

Hernandez is survived by his 4-year-old daughter and fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins.

MA state police continue to investigate the death.

"Chico was no a saint, but... he would never take his own life", Murphy said.

"Juries have such tremendous power", said Norm Pattis, a CT lawyer who conferred with Hernandez after his conviction for the Lloyd murder.

Hernandez's death comes the same day the Patriots are making their visit to the White House today to mark their Super Bowl win. Last Friday, Hernandez wept openly as he was acquitted of earlier Boston murders. "It was a long draft", Hernandez admits, "but I was just happy regardless of where I got picked because it's a dream come true".

Monroe, a graphic designer, said Hernandez's temperament stayed even-keeled throughout the two-month trial, where prosecutors fingered him as the triggerman who killed the Cape Verdean men following a nightclub dispute.
