Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez dead after hanging self in cell

Former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez found dead in prison in apparent suicide

Authorities said Hernandez used a bed sheet to hang himself in his jail cell just days after he was found not guilty for the 2012 murder of two men.

Corrections Department spokesman Christopher Fallon said Hernandez was in a single cell at the maximum security state prison and had tried to block his cell door by jamming various items to prevent officers from entering.

Prison officials said they are not aware of any suicide note written by Hernandez and they had no concern that Hernandez might take his own life.

"There's more ... WBZ also cites sources who say there's evidence Hernandez smoked synthetic marijuana shortly before his death".

MA state police has launched an investigation into the circumstances around Hernandez's death.

The New England Patriots, the Super Bowl LI champions, are scheduled to visit the White House this afternoon to meet with President Donald Trump.

Baez has launched an investigation into the Hernandez's death on behalf of the former New England Patriots' tight end's family, which he told TMZ is "devastated" by the news and isn't buying that the 27-year-old was in the mental state to commit suicide. He had appealed the verdict.

John Salvi, who was convicted of killing two abortion clinic workers in Brookline in 1994, also had his convictions dismissed after he killed himself in prison. "Mr. Hernandez's next of kin have been notified".

"Absolutely no chance he took his own life", Hernandez's former agent Brian Murphy tweeted. "We intend, at this point, to go forward with the cases". He was now serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd, but the recent acquittal was believed to be crucial for Hernandez's appeal in the Lloyd case. Hernandez's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Aaron Hernandez's lawyer says he intends to conduct his own investigation into the National Football League star's hanging death.

"I think that if we look back at some of the things that are available to appeal on that case, I think there's a strong likelihood". Prosecutors claimed Hernandez opened fire at Abreu and Furtado's vehicle while it was stopped at a red light in Boston because he was angry that one of them spilled a drink on him at a club. The team released him in 2013 after he was arrested for killing Lloyd.
