A 10-year-old boy was shot and killed in Newark early Saturday, according to media reports.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka issued a statement Monday confirming the details of the killing and identifying the dead child as Josiah Coleman. But they declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
Mayor Ras Baraka, in response to a 10-year-old boy being shot by another boy inside his grandfather's home, is calling for stricter gun control.
Prosecutors haven't filed charges in connection with the shooting.
Authorities did not say where the gun came from or how the juvenile shooter got the weapon.
Josiah was apparently visiting the home on the 800 block of South 19th Street for a family party when he was shot around 1:20 a.m. Saturday, relatives and a friend of the boy's family said.
The first-term mayor, while crediting Newark Police for taking 500 guns off the streets, said guns are still getting into Newark despite New Jersey's strong gun laws. We need strong national gun control. Baraka said in a statement.
The boy's death marks the crime-ridden city's fourth fatal shooting this week.
